Most blankets are built for one environment: the couch. They’re soft, they look good in a product photo, and they fall apart the first time you drag them across a campsite. An outdoor blanket — a real one — has to do more than that.
The shell matters. You want a water-resistant or DWR-coated ripstop exterior that sheds morning dew, light rain, and the inevitable fire pit moisture without soaking through to the insulation. Once the insulation gets wet, you lose warmth and you don’t get it back until everything dries out — which doesn’t happen fast in a tent or a truck bed.
The insulation matters too. Synthetic fill performs wet where down doesn’t. It’s heavier than down for an equivalent warmth rating, but it’s more practical for car camping and overlanding where you’re not counting grams, you’re counting on your gear. Synthetic also machine washes without the paranoia that comes with expensive down fills.
And packability matters when you don’t have unlimited space. Rooftop tents and truck beds have gear constraints that living rooms don’t. A blanket that stuffs into its own sack and compresses to a manageable size earns its spot in the rig. One that doesn’t stays home.
A camping blanket is a general-purpose insulated throw — versatile, medium weight, designed to layer and travel. Most people use them as a top layer at camp or a backup when the sleeping bag isn’t enough. They’re sized for one person and optimized for packability.
An overland comforter is a different category entirely. It’s a full-size, bed-sized insulated comforter built to replace the sleeping bag in vehicle camping and rooftop tent setups. It’s heavier, wider, and warmer — because sleeping in a tent on a truck demands more coverage than a one-person backpacker bag delivers. The Gorilla Dirt Overland Comforter line is built specifically for this use case, with dimensions that fit standard RTT platforms and insulation that handles three-season temperatures without the claustrophobia of a mummy bag.
We’re a small-batch outdoor gear brand based in Murphys, California — Gold Rush country at the edge of the Sierra foothills. We make gear for the people who actually go out there, not the people who buy gear to feel like they might someday. That means trail-tested designs, no filler SKUs, and everything built to hold up through a season of actual use.
Every blanket in our lineup is machine washable, water-resistant, and designed to be used hard. We don’t make gear you have to baby. If it can’t survive a real trip, it doesn’t make the cut.
Small-batch. Trail-tested. Murphys, California.
